8/8/2024 Fishing Report

As you can see, THE COHO ARE SHOWING UP!  Note however, that this fish doesn't have a fly in its mouth, which means the hoody is still up for grabs.  Thanks to Nick with Alaska Angling Club for the photo!  Your best bets for these early cohos will be the extreme ends of the channel.  Both Sheep Creek and the mouth of Fish Creek / Starlite Beach access would be great places to try.  Dolly Llamas as always are some of the best producing flies we have.  If you want to enjoy your fly casting, we recommend various Clouser Minnows, Starlite Leeches, and Wild Things.

The pinks are still coming into the freshwater around town and there are still some chums spawning as well.  Montana Creek and Fish Creek are both low and the fish can be a little spookier than you would except during bead season.  Cowee Creek out the road gets enough glacial influence that it stays flowing.  Not only that, but the murky water can be extremely helpful for tricking the big Dollies.  Start with 10mm beads out there and only drop down the size if you need to.

The weather forecast is looking great, and the tides are ideal for some killer beach fishing for these first few cohos. Hope everyone has a great weekend, and don't forget the sunscreen!

Oh, and don't forget to leave the fly in its mouth if you want that hoody!

As always, we love featuring your photos for our fishing reports.  If you have a great fish, scenery, or action photo that has to do with fishing around town send it our way!  You can email photos or videos to cory@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com.  Please remember to handle fish with care, especially if you are practicing catch and release.  Consider getting a net with a rubber basket to help land fish quickly, pinch your barbs and keep them in the water until you are ready to snap a quick photo.

See you on the water!
